"Thank you so very much for making this special time in my life even more joyous! The staff and midwives at Southern OB are some of the best I've ever seen."
Having a baby is one of the most exciting times in your life. . .however, as you prepare for the birth of your child, it is only natural to feel apprehensive or to have questions. Southern OB/GYN is committed to providing the highest-quality care and will strive to make your pregnancy as stress-free as possible. Please feel free to discuss any questions you may have with your physician or nurse midwife.
Our practice provides comprehensive care – routine and high risk – for our patients who are pregnant. Obstetrical visits are scheduled on a monthly or weekly basis, depending on the month of your pregnancy. You may choose to see any physician throughout your pregnancy; however, after-hour deliveries are made by the physician on call within our group. If you require an urgent visit for a problem and your physician is unavailable, you will be seen by the doctor who is available at the time.
In addition to our physicians, our staff includes three nurse midwives who are available to offer expert, personalized care to patients who desire the services of a certified nurse midwife.
An ultrasound, also called sonography, is performed to visualize and determine your health and the health of your baby. Your doctor may order an ultrasound for several reasons, including the following: to establish the presence of a living embryo or fetus, to estimate the age of your pregnancy, to evaluate the position of the fetus and to determine if there are multiple pregnancies.
We have acquired advanced ultrasound technology that displays clinical images of the human body, allowing our physicians and patients to see 4D images (see examples below).
Widely recognized for its clinical use in obstetrics and gynecology, 4D Ultrasound with real-time motion is a new, powerful tool that can aid our physicians in studying the baby's motion and behavior, the baby's surface anatomy and problems related to a woman's uterus and ovaries. It is an amazing new technology and we are thrilled to offer it to our patients.
Our physicians deliver at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. You are encouraged to pre-register with the hospital approximately one month prior to your expected delivery date.
If an emergency develops during office hours, please call our office immediately to advise our nurse of the problem. You will be given instructions as to the appropriate course of action for you to take. If the emergency occurs after hours, please call the hospital main line at (229) 333-1000, and the physician or midwife on call will be notified immediately.
When you start having contractions or if your membranes rupture (“water breaks”), call or come to our office immediately. If the office is closed, go directly to the Labor and Delivery Unit at South Georgia Medical Center. You do not need to call first. The OB nurse will examine you and notify our physician or midwife on call of your arrival and your progress in labor. Be sure to tell the nurse of any special problems or circumstances related to your pregnancy.
You need to choose a pediatrician to care for your baby after his/her birth. Most pediatricians encourage and support parents-to-be in consultative appointments prior to the baby's birth. After selection of your pediatrician, please notify our office at one of your regular prenatal visits.
Choosing whether or not you want to breastfeed your baby is a personal choice and deserves careful consideration. Both breast milk and bottled formula are healthy and responsible ways to feed your baby, and each has advantages and disadvantages. However, only you can decide if breastfeeding is the right choice for you. For additional information about breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or nurse midwife.
